If you’re sick of fighting frizz and straightening your hair on the daily, Keratin Treatments are your new BFF, restoring youthful lustre and elasticity in just a few hours explains Kate, Store Manager HAIRHOUSE North Lakes.

What is Keratin?

Keratin is an essential protein that makes up the hair, with every single hair wrapped in a protective layer of cells, called the cuticle. If you have damaged hair – either by the environment, chemical treatments, Heat Styling or life in general – tiny holes form along the surface effecting the natural Keratin, causing the hair to frizz, break and split.

How do Keratin Treatments work?

Basically, Keratin Treatments are Hair Smoothing Treatments that ‘fill in’ areas of damaged hair depleted of Keratin with new Keratin, resulting in a smooth, shiny surface, free of frizz and fly-aways. This makes Styling simpler and quicker, as the condition of the hair is vastly improved, Blow-Dry results and Hair Straightening processes are a much faster, smoother process on all hair types.

How long do the results of Keratin Treatments last?

Depending on your hair length, the Keratin Treatment process takes 1 – 3 hours and the results can last between 6 – 9 months. That’s up to 273 days without the need to straighten formerly frizzy hair daily!

Will Keratin Treatments harm my hair?

Keratin Treatments are not harmful to the hair as the process doesn’t rely on chemicals. Rather than the Keratin forcing its way into the strand like chemical straightening does - which can lead to breakage - Keratin Treatments gently coat the hair cuticle, soothing and smoothing frizz. Even without Heat Styling, the benefits to your Hair Health are huge. As Keratin Treatments reduce tangles when smoothing the cuticle, it is easier to get frizz-free results when letting your hair dry naturally, so you can skip Heat Styling days more often. Aftercare is also easy to maintain at-home with Keratin Care products. Salon Stylists also advise steering clear of Haircare containing Sulphates which can negatively affect the Keratin.

Can I keep some texture with Keratin Treatments?

Keratin Treatment’s reduce frizz by 80% while retaining smooth, natural movement in the hair cuticle, so if you have wavy hair or curly hair, you can retain the texture without the frizzy fly-aways and dryness. Ideal for any hair type, Keratin Treatments simply give you the best hair of your life, whatever hair type you have!

Can I colour my hair if I’ve had Keratin Treatments?

Salon Stylists agree it is safe to have your hair coloured after Keratin Treatments but advise that it is important for the cuticle to be able to absorb the Keratin Treatment, so waiting two weeks will allow for this. Try and avoid Blow Drying, Heat Styling and Hair Straightening during this two-week period also as you really want to give the Keratin a good shot at absorbing. Be gentle with Hair Brushes and allow for airdrying your hair as often as possible. Although this may sound scary, the Keratin Treatment will ensure hair dries much smoother than ever before, making even Heat Styling free days great hair days!

Does Heat Styling damage Keratin Treatments?

Hair can be increasingly vulnerable after Keratin Treatments, so after allowing for the two weeks down time, Heat Styling is harmless. However, Salon Stylists advise lower heat settings when using Heat Styling Tools and maintaining at home aftercare is important after Keratin Treatments to ensure the hair structure remains protected and the hair shaft doesn’t suffer further damage. Ask your Salon Stylist about the best at-home Haircare plan to prolong the benefits of your Keratin Treatments.

Does is matter what products I use after my Keratin Treatment?

It is always best to use the specific product range that your stylist recommends following your Keratin Treatment. This will be a range that has been tested and ensures longevity.
