All hair concerns can benefit from a Hair Oil. That’s the simple part.

The tricky bit? Which Hair Oil is right for your hair and how do you use it?

Here’s my honest review of the best Hair Oils for common hair concerns:

Why does hair need Hair Oil?

All hair types need extra moisture, lubrication and protection, and Hair Oils deliver just that. Whatever your hair concern, here’s how Hair Oil can help:

Here’s how:

  • Hair Oil coats the Hair Cuticle with nourishing ingredients which can protect and strengthen it against environmental damage.
  • Hair Oil creates an invisible barrier, preventing heat from Styling Tools getting into the cuticle to absorb vital moisture and create brittleness.
  • Hair Oils can help to promote shine and glossiness. When applied to the hair, they close the Hair Cuticle, so it becomes smooth. When light hits this surface, it reflects, giving the appearance of shine.
  • Hair Oil absorbs into dry hair types and create instant hydration where it’s needed most.
  • Hair Oils act as a fantastic Leave-In Treatment.
  • Hair Oil seal ends and prevent flyaways on styled hair.

What are the best oils for:

Dry Hair:

Kerastase Elixir Ultime Original Oil leaves my hair feeling soft and shiny, restoring the hair fibre to reduce frizz.

How to use:
Ideal on wet or dry hair, I just apply 1 – 2 pumps from mid-lengths to ends before styling. This is such a luxe product that you really don’t need much to get maxed hydration.

Heat Damaged Hair:

Sexy Hair Healthy Love Oil detangles and moisturizes while reducing breakage by up to 55% and protecting my hair from humidity and heat as high as 232°C, so it’s great on days I’m using Heat Stylers.

How to use:
I apply a small amount on damp or dry hair from mid-lengths to ends then style as desired. I always add more to ends for extra shine on the go. The packaging is so compact, I always keep this one in my cosmetic bag!

Frizzy Hair:
Matrix Food for Soft Multi-use Hair Oil Serum contains avocado oil to seal in hydration and create a protective barrier for hair.

How to use:
I like to comb this one through lengths and ends before tying my hair up and leaving it in as a treatment. Packed with vegan ingredients and zero sulphates and minerals this Hair Oil doesn’t feel like it builds up and weighs down the hair too much at all.

Dull Hair:
Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil is packed with nurturing ingredients to add 125% more shine to hair. This Hair Oil is a great investment as a little goes a long way.

How to use: Turn bottle upside down and tap out one drop which can be applied from through damp or dry hair. Do not rinse.

What not to do with Hair Oils:

  • Hair Oil can build-up over several applications making hair appear greasy, limp, and darker than usual. I always use a Clarifying Shampoo in between using Hair Oil on high rotation.
  • The mid-lengths and ends of your hair need Hair Oil the most as this is the driest part. So only apply it in this area.
  • Don’t rub Hair Oil into your hair as this can aggravate the Hair Cuticle. Instead, smooth it down the Hair Shaft in downward motion to seal as you go. I always just use my fingertips so that it really gets in where I need it to.
  • Unless you are applying a Scalp Oil, keep Hair Oils away from the scalp to prevent oiliness and build-up.
  • A little goes a long way so always follow directions on how much Hair Oil to apply.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after each application. Your clothes will thank you for it!
